Counting Days Thoughts: Rey Part 1
So I've been brainstorming Counting Days a lot. It's going to be longer and a lot more'granular' than Edge of Night because Rey's POV is 1. Rather methodical in nature - she has an 'Engineer Brain' 2. I have to pull off a realistic alignment shift and 3. Show some of the factors that influenced her decisions in Edge of Night.
Here's a sort-of rough notes list on Rey, some of which happened in the comments section of both fics in the series...Brainstorming, yo!!
1. My headcanon about Rey is that she's a bit more on the 'neutral' side of the alignment scale than Luke, for example, was. The look we got at her in canon was, to a certain extent, 100% reactive action. The one time we saw her in an ethical conundrum? Her choice was negated by that very convenient earthquake/crevice, and Ren lives to fight another day.
2. Sidious has a lot to work with, and is the master of the long game. In a lot of ways her situation was even worse than Anakin's - she wasn't a slave, but she was inches away from starvation and death every day of her life . And she's way worse off than Luke was on Tatooine. I think that Rey having a rather harsh worldview is very canonically possible, and that, maybe with a little nudge...
3. Rey’s perspective inspiration:
-Puella Magi Madoka Magica
-Faust
This song from PMMM.
Yeah. I know. *dead*
4. PMMM: Her voice is a combination of Homura and Kyoko, but at her core she’s got some Madoka...But it's mainly Homura because she, like Sidious, is playing the long game. And she uses what works.
5. Faust: She uses what works. There was a comment on 'Counting Days' that described her as a wolf training to be a bigger wolf.
6. Stay standing in a universe that will eat you alive. Thanks a lot, Jakku.
7. However, she is still capable of caring and love. My challenge is for her to end up in Anti-hero or Anti-villain territory - the varieties being Unscrupulous Hero, Necessarily Evil, and Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds rather than Villain-Sue territory.
8. Oh, yeah, I love TV tropes. Can you tell?
I'm sure this list will expand soon, as I'm back in the 'Counting Days' groove...
