lightpoint: portrait of sidious with color adjustment (sidious2)

Darth Sidious is a tough character to work with. In my opinion, the worst thing you can do with him is make him too nice... Well, genuinely nice. If he's good to anyone, there needs to be a reason. 'Counting Days' is kind of a strange fic, in that it's 100% Rey's POV, so she only sees what he wants her to see...at first. She figures out that her new friend isn't quite what he appears to be, but by the time she realizes what's up, he's a part of her life.

They do, however, become a team, of sorts. There are always two, after all...

Here's some notes on Sidious. Some of it is my comments-section brainstorming.

1. I'm running with some of the info from the writers about the RotS novelization...He is capable of a sort-of version of caring for a few, select people. In the prequels and the OT it was Vader. And he is really good at drawing people into his sphere (commence manipulation)...Besides, it's Rey's POV, so this is going to have a different 'flavor' than 'Edge'.

2. *continued* The inference about his feelings regarding Vader is a bit of a 'read between the lines' thing, and something that was said in an interview with someone in the production staff, where the novel version of when he reveals himself to Anakin was discussed (I forget who it was, but yep, canon), and a line about the Vader suit being a 'jewel box'. The novel 'Darth Plagious' (turns out it's like 75% Palpatine LOL) implies that he had a sorta-healthy relationship with his mother - in that he really hated the way his father treated her, and considered taking her name...At least before he killed his entire family while high on the Dark Side (interestingly, his Master had him 'deal' with it after the fact by detaching himself from the memory, which implies that there *might* have been something like regret, there...COMPLEXITY YO).

3. Of course, this is Palpatine, so any attachment he winds up feeling isn't going to be what most people (including Rey) consider friendship or love. He does get attached, though. And possessive/protective. And covets, a lot o_O

4. I am of the opinion that if anyone was going to train Rey in the Dark Side, I'd rather it be Sidious. My headcanon for Rey has her on the more 'neutral' end of the 'alignment' spectrum, considering where she grew up, how she survived, and the fact that she really wasn't shown making a ginormous good/evil choice in the movie. Actually, her one major possible choice was taken from her at the end by a convenient earthquake, and Kylo lives to fight another day. Seriously, there's no way she wasn't on the edge of the Dark Side during that duel.

5. He thoroughly exploits Rey's isolation, loneliness, and cynicism. Her compassion, though...
